1. Make the scene safe: Stay calm. Keep the road clear – park away from accident. Position people to warn other traffic. Ensure nobody smokes.
2. See who is injured: Assess the number of injured and how they are hurt so emergency services can be informed.
3. Send for help: Dial 000 if possible, otherwise call 112 from a mobile phone to connect to the emergency network.
4. Assist the injured: Give priority to the unconscious. Remove helmet if the victim is unconscious, vomiting or has severe head injuries (two people should carefully remove the helmet supporting the victim’s neck.) Turn the victim on side, clear airway, check for breathing. Apply mouth to mouth if necessary. Stop any bleeding by direct pressure on the wound. Bleeding limbs should be elevated. Never give food or drink.
